What is a Punch?
A punch is a tool used for marking on to a wood piece or a metal object, mainly during their processing. It’s made up off a hard metal rod , and has a blunt end as well as a sharp one. The blunt edge is used for holding it comfortably, and the sharp end is used for marking onto a piece by hammering onto it from the back end. The image below shows the different types of punches, we will be explaining some of them further.
Types of Punches:-
CENTER PUNCH

Fig (1) Center punch
This is the type of punch is used to mark the center of holes, especially by those carpenters who work especially for drilling holes into wood and metal pieces. They make deep enough holes to allow the drill bit to move in a few millimeters easily.
NAIL PUNCH:

They are often known as nail sets and are used for driving nail heads into and even below the material’s surface. It also has a smaller version known as a pin punch, which is mainly used by mechanics and electricians to who drive pins into objects which will be attached to rotating shafts.
These pin punches are usually shorter and thinner than the usual Nail punches.
PRICK PUNCH:

Although they use similar laws and concepts as those of center punches, they have sharper angle tips which allow the worker to make deeper and narrower cuts. They are also known as dot punches by workers because they can mark several places near to each other to allow narrow drill bits to push into the piece.
Their most common application is transferring a design from one surface to another.
TRANSFER PUNCH:

Fig (4) Transfer Punch
These allow carpenters to copy a hole pattern and set precise locations for drill bits to enter into the piece especially for tapped threaded holes. They have specific outer diameters that spread out from below the tip till the end of the punches. They are also very precise of transferring a hole from one surface to another.
PIN PUNCH

Fig (5) Pin Punch
Pin punches does not have sharp or pointed end instead they have a flat base and has a parallel shank end. These are used for removing metal pins from a hole. To loosen the pin to be removed first use the starter punch then use a pin punch to finish removing the pin from the hole. The figure shows the different size of pin punch. It has a bigger version which is called “Nail Punch” which is described above.
DRIFT PUNCH

Fig (6) Drift Punch
Basically Drift punch is not used as a punch, it is used as a pin so it is also called “Drift Pin”. this pin makes the riveting faster and effective. Driving a drift punch through a rivet holes of two pieces of metals will cause the two holes to align. Drift pins are not traditionally punches and they should only be used to align the existing holes.
